I HUSTLED OUT OF THE office without saying anything to Leo, partially because I was a big fat chicken who didn’t know what she wanted to say and partially because seeing all of those articles and knowing what my presence was doing for Leo’s reputation...

Well, it would have been selling it short to say it muddied the waters more than a little bit.

I had never, ever thought that I might be actually helping him by playing his arm candy. Yeah, he’d said something about his publicist insisting on it, but I’d thought that was just something he was joking about. Honestly, I hadn’t really thought too much about why he was paying me—in hot water and food, at the moment—to stick around. I’d just taken it at face value and gone about my life.

Weird and surreal as it had become.

I slid through the front doors, the box full of one notebook and my purse on my hip and my eyes on the ground, trying to make sense of this new information—and trying to figure out where it fit into my whole he’s better off without me theme.

The two things didn’t really seem to fit together. And I definitely wasn’t sure what to do about that. I wasn’t even sure there was anything to do about that. Was it an equal trade? Helping his reputation in exchange for possible putting his life at risk? Putting my life at risk—while getting to live in that apartment and enjoy all the wealth?

Putting my life at risk... while not wanting to leave the man I thought I might be falling in love with?

I shied away from that thought, my legs following the sidestep my mind had just taken, and stumbled on the curb I hadn’t seen coming.

Strong, warm hands reached out to grab me, keeping me on my feet, and I looked up, laughing and about to thank whoever had saved me, when I froze.

I knew those eyes, which shifted between blue and green depending on his mood. I knew that chin. The nose. The sweep of chestnut-colored hair across the forehead.

The cocky arch of the brow as he recognized me, too.

“Mark Parker,” I breathed. “What in the fucking hell are you doing here?”

His eyes narrowed, his face telling me he was just as shocked to see me as I was to see him. “Olivia. I could ask the same thing of you.” His eyes swiveled from me to the building behind me and then back, and suddenly his face cleared. “You’re the one they’ve been taking pictures of. You’re his new head of accounting.”

Shit. Shit, shit, shit. Of all the things I could deal with in the entire world, Mark Parker knowing where I worked—and what I was doing there, and therefore where I was sleeping, if he read the paper—was the last thing I wanted.

I couldn’t have that. I couldn’t. It would put everything at risk.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I told him coldly. “Stay away from me, or I’ll call the cops.
